What Makes the 6.2L Hellcat HEMI Engine Special?
Dodge introduced the 6.2L Supercharged HEMI in the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat. Shortly afterward, the Charger SRT Hellcat joined the lineup.
At launch, the engine produced an impressive 707 horsepower. Consequently, it helped establish the Hellcat as one of the most powerful American production muscle cars of its time.
The engine combines a durable cast-iron block with aluminum cylinder heads and forged internal components. Together, these parts support the high cylinder pressures that come with supercharged performance.
Moreover, the Hellcat uses a belt-driven supercharger instead of relying on natural aspiration.
The supercharger forces additional air into the engine. As a result, the combustion process can produce significantly more power than a comparable naturally aspirated setup.
Another major advantage is the engine’s strong low-end and midrange torque. Because the supercharger responds directly to engine speed, drivers can experience strong acceleration without waiting for a turbocharger to build boost.
Over the years, Dodge introduced several versions of the supercharged 6.2L HEMI. These include the standard Hellcat, Redeye, and Super Stock.
However, these engines do not share identical specifications. Therefore, buyers should identify the correct version before purchasing a replacement.

Used Hellcat Engine Condition and Mechanical Inspection
When shopping for a used Hellcat engine, mileage is only one part of the decision.
Although lower mileage can be attractive, proper maintenance and mechanical condition matter just as much.
For example, an engine with a documented service history may offer more confidence than one with unknown maintenance records.
Furthermore, the Hellcat operates under demanding conditions. Its supercharger increases cylinder pressure, while the cooling and lubrication systems must manage substantial heat.
Therefore, buyers should review the engine’s condition carefully before installation.
A thorough mechanical inspection should focus on several important areas.
Cylinder Compression
Technicians use compression testing to evaluate how effectively each cylinder holds pressure.
Consistent readings can indicate balanced cylinder sealing. However, technicians must compare the actual results with the manufacturer’s specifications.
Engine Oil Condition
Engine oil can reveal useful information about internal wear.
For instance, excessive metal particles may indicate bearing or other component damage. Similarly, coolant contamination can suggest a sealing or cooling-system problem.
Supercharger Assembly
The supercharger plays a major role in the Hellcat’s performance.
Therefore, technicians should examine its pulley, snout, rotor condition, and accessible cooling connections.
External Engine Components
Technicians should also inspect the oil pan, timing cover, cylinder heads, sensors, and mounting points.
In addition, they should look for damaged connectors, missing components, or signs of previous repairs.
Although these checks can reveal potential problems, no single inspection guarantees the condition of every internal component.
Hellcat Engine Compression Test – Eight-Cylinder Reference
A compression test helps technicians evaluate an engine’s internal sealing.
During testing, the technician measures the pressure each cylinder produces while the starter turns the engine.
Because the Hellcat uses eight cylinders, the technician should check all eight under consistent testing conditions.
A healthy engine generally produces readings that remain reasonably close to one another. However, the readings must also satisfy the manufacturer’s service limits.
For example, a single cylinder with much lower compression may indicate worn piston rings, damaged valves, or another internal problem.
Eight-Cylinder Compression Test Example
The following table illustrates balanced compression readings for a 6.2L Hellcat engine.
Important: These figures are examples for educational reference. They are not verified test results from the featured 38,000-mile engine.
| Cylinder | Engine Bank | Compression | Variation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cylinder 1 | Left | 160 PSI | 0.0% |
| Cylinder 2 | Right | 158 PSI | -1.3% |
| Cylinder 3 | Left | 161 PSI | +0.6% |
| Cylinder 4 | Right | 159 PSI | -0.6% |
| Cylinder 5 | Left | 160 PSI | 0.0% |
| Cylinder 6 | Right | 162 PSI | +1.3% |
| Cylinder 7 | Left | 159 PSI | -0.6% |
| Cylinder 8 | Right | 161 PSI | +0.6% |
Compression Test Summary
| Measurement | Example Result |
|---|---|
| Average compression | 160 PSI |
| Highest reading | 162 PSI |
| Lowest reading | 158 PSI |
| Difference between cylinders | 4 PSI |
| Maximum variation | 2.47% |
Understanding the Compression Results
In this example, all eight cylinders produce readings between 158 and 162 PSI.
The average is 160 PSI. Meanwhile, the highest and lowest readings differ by only 4 PSI.
That difference represents approximately 2.47% of the highest reading.
Consequently, the example demonstrates the type of consistency technicians look for when comparing cylinders.
However, consistent readings do not automatically prove that an engine is mechanically perfect.
Several factors can influence compression readings. These include battery strength, cranking speed, engine temperature, and testing procedures.
Therefore, technicians should follow the correct service procedure and compare the results with factory specifications.
Why Compression Matters on a Supercharged Hellcat
The Hellcat’s supercharger increases the amount of air entering the cylinders.
As a result, the engine experiences high combustion pressures during operation.
Its piston rings, valves, and cylinder walls must maintain proper sealing to support reliable performance.
When compression drops significantly, the engine may develop several problems:
Reduced horsepower
Rough idling
Engine misfires
Increased oil consumption
Excessive crankcase pressure
Hard starting
Poor overall performance
If a cylinder produces an unusually low reading, a technician may perform a leak-down test.
This additional test helps identify where the cylinder loses pressure.
For example, air escaping through the intake can indicate an intake-valve sealing problem. Likewise, air escaping through the exhaust may point toward an exhaust-valve issue.
Meanwhile, excessive air entering the crankcase may suggest piston-ring or cylinder-wall wear.
Together, compression and leak-down testing provide useful information about engine condition.
Hellcat Supercharger Inspection and Performance
The standard Hellcat engine uses a 2.4L IHI twin-screw supercharger.
Unlike a turbocharger, which relies on exhaust gases, the Hellcat supercharger uses a belt connected to the crankshaft.
Consequently, the system responds quickly to changes in engine speed.
The factory supercharger produces approximately 11.6 PSI of boost in the standard 707-horsepower configuration.
However, boost pressure can vary with operating conditions and modifications.
Because the supercharger is a major engine component, its condition deserves careful attention.
Supercharger Pulley
First, technicians should inspect the pulley for visible damage, excessive wear, or signs of modification.
A damaged pulley can affect belt alignment and supercharger operation.
Supercharger Snout
Next, technicians should examine the snout for lubricant leaks, unusual bearing noise, or excessive movement.
These symptoms may indicate wear that requires further investigation.
Supercharger Rotors
Technicians should also inspect accessible rotor surfaces for contamination or physical damage.
For example, unusual contact marks may indicate an internal problem.
Bypass Valve
The bypass valve helps regulate airflow during different operating conditions.
Therefore, the mechanism should move smoothly without obvious binding or damage.
Intercooler Connections
Finally, technicians should examine accessible charge-air cooling connections and seals.
Leaks or contamination can affect cooling-system performance.
Although visual checks are useful, technicians may need additional operational testing to assess the complete supercharger assembly.
Engine Oil and Lubrication-System Inspection
The Hellcat depends on proper lubrication to protect its internal components.
Engine oil reduces friction between moving parts. In addition, it helps carry heat away from critical engine surfaces.
The crankshaft, bearings, camshaft, connecting rods, and valvetrain all rely on a consistent oil supply.
Therefore, poor lubrication can quickly lead to expensive mechanical damage.
When examining a used Hellcat engine, technicians should check for:
- Metallic particles in the engine oil
- Coolant contamination
- Excessive sludge buildup
- Oil leaks around seals and covers
- Damage to accessible lubrication components
For example, metallic debris may indicate internal wear. Similarly, milky oil can suggest coolant contamination.
However, clean-looking oil does not guarantee that every internal component is healthy.
For this reason, buyers should consider lubrication-system findings alongside other inspection results.
Hellcat Engine Donor Vehicle and Mileage Information

Hellcat Engine Compatibility and Vehicle Applications
The 6.2L Supercharged HEMI powers several high-performance Dodge and Ram vehicles.
However, each application may use different accessories, electronics, or engine calibrations.
Therefore, buyers should never assume that every Hellcat engine is interchangeable.
Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat
Dodge introduced the Challenger SRT Hellcat for the 2015 model year.
The original engine produces 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque.
In addition, it uses a 2.4L IHI supercharger and forged internal components.
Later Challenger variants introduced different performance specifications.
Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
The Charger SRT Hellcat also uses the supercharged 6.2L HEMI.
Although it shares major engine components with the Challenger, installation details can vary by model year.
Consequently, buyers should verify the original engine configuration before choosing a replacement.
Hellcat Redeye Engine
The Hellcat Redeye uses a larger 2.7L supercharger.
In its original Challenger configuration, the engine produces 797 horsepower.
Furthermore, Dodge upgraded several components to support the increased output.
Therefore, a Redeye engine should not automatically replace a standard Hellcat without a compatibility review.
Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock
The Challenger SRT Super Stock produces 807 horsepower.
It shares important components with the Redeye. However, Dodge uses a different factory calibration to achieve its rated output.
Ram 1500 TRX
The Ram 1500 TRX uses a truck-specific version of the supercharged 6.2L HEMI.
Its factory output reaches 702 horsepower.
However, the TRX uses different accessories, mounting arrangements, and electronic systems.
As a result, a standard Challenger or Charger Hellcat engine is not automatically a direct replacement.
Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat
The Durango SRT Hellcat also uses a supercharged 6.2L HEMI.
However, its drivetrain and engine configuration serve a different vehicle platform.
Therefore, replacement buyers should confirm the correct engine variant and supporting components.
VIN Compatibility Assistance
Before purchasing a replacement Hellcat engine, provide your vehicle’s VIN.
The VIN helps identify your vehicle’s original engine configuration.
Our team can then review the available engine against your vehicle details.
In addition, buyers should compare relevant part numbers, wiring connections, accessories, and transmission requirements.
This process helps reduce the risk of ordering an incompatible assembly.
Hellcat Engine Installation Requirements
Installing a Hellcat engine requires careful preparation.
Although a direct replacement may reuse many factory components, custom swaps often need additional equipment.
Therefore, technicians should confirm the installation requirements before removing the original engine.
ECU and Engine Management
The Hellcat relies on electronic controls to manage fuel delivery, ignition timing, throttle response, and other engine functions.
For a compatible factory replacement, the existing vehicle electronics may support the replacement engine.
However, a custom swap may require a compatible controller package or aftermarket management system.
Additionally, some installations require programming or electronic integration.
Fuel System
The Hellcat needs a fuel system that can support its horsepower output.
Therefore, fuel pumps, injectors, pressure regulation, and engine calibration must work together.
For custom builds, the installer should verify that the fuel system meets the engine’s requirements.
Engine Cooling
The Hellcat uses a primary cooling system to regulate engine temperature.
In addition, a separate charge-air cooling circuit helps manage heat from the supercharger.
Both systems play important roles in engine performance.
Consequently, installers should inspect the cooling components before operating the engine under heavy load.
Transmission Compatibility
Factory Hellcat applications have used the Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual and TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmissions.
However, transmission compatibility depends on the specific vehicle and engine configuration.
Installers must also consider the correct flywheel or flexplate, electronic controls, and drivetrain connections.
Recommended Pre-Installation Checks
Before starting the engine, technicians should:
Inspect accessible gaskets and seals.
Replace the engine oil and filter.
Check cooling-system hoses and connections.
Inspect accessory belts and pulleys.
Verify electrical connections.
Examine intake and exhaust components.
Prime the oil system according to the service procedure.
Confirm ECU compatibility.
Check for diagnostic trouble codes after installation.
These steps help technicians identify potential installation problems early.
Hellcat Engine Swap Applications
The Hellcat 6.2L Supercharged HEMI is popular among enthusiasts who want serious V8 performance.
Because the engine produces substantial horsepower in factory form, builders often consider it for custom muscle-car projects.
For example, a Hellcat engine can serve as the foundation for a classic Mopar restomod.
Likewise, builders may use the engine in other platforms when they can accommodate its size, electronics, and power output.
However, custom swaps require more than a powerful engine.
Important Swap Requirements
Before starting a project, consider:
Engine-bay clearance
Motor mounts and crossmembers
Transmission selection
Fuel-system capacity
Engine cooling
Supercharger charge-air cooling
Wiring and engine management
Exhaust routing
Driveshaft and differential strength
In addition, builders should consider the vehicle’s brakes, suspension, and overall drivetrain capacity.
After all, the supporting components must handle the engine’s performance safely.
For complex installations, professional assistance can help reduce costly mistakes.
Signs You May Need a Replacement Hellcat Engine
The 6.2L Supercharged HEMI is built for serious performance, but like any engine, it can develop problems as the miles add up. If your Hellcat isn’t running the way it used to, certain warning signs may point to internal wear or mechanical damage.
Here are a few common signs to watch for:
Excessive oil consumption: If you’re constantly topping off your engine oil, worn piston rings or valve seals could be the cause.
Knocking or rattling noises: Unusual sounds coming from the engine, especially during acceleration, may indicate worn bearings or other internal damage.
Loss of power: If your Hellcat feels sluggish or struggles to accelerate, low compression, fuel-system problems, or supercharger issues could be responsible.
Frequent overheating: An engine that repeatedly runs hot can suffer serious damage to its cylinder heads, gaskets, and internal components.
Recurring check engine light: Persistent warning lights, especially alongside rough idling or misfires, may indicate a problem that needs immediate attention.
Of course, not every engine problem calls for a complete replacement. However, if your Hellcat has suffered major internal damage or the repair costs keep adding up, a used OEM 6.2L Supercharged HEMI engine may be a more affordable option than rebuilding your existing motor.
